How To Build A Cheap Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder
Anyone who puts up a Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder in the backyard or garden hopes to enjoy watching the birds that come by without attracting unwanted guests like pesky squirrels. These cute little pests chase off the birds, eat all the bird seeds, and can destroy bird feeders.
To get the best of these squirrels you can either buy one of the available squirrel proof feeders at Amazon.com or you can buy some material and build you own unique squirrel proof bird feeder. It should be strong and made so the squirrels can not get to the bird seeds. The feeder should also be placed more that 10 feet away from fences, trees, and the house so the squirrels can not jump onto the bird feeder.
You can build a squirrel proof feeder that those pesky squirrels will not be able to get into using the step by step tutorial instructions at http://www.Instructables.com. The materials you will need are all available at your local hardware store, Home Depot, or Lowes for less than $10, and while the process is somewhat labor-intensive, it’s still doable in under a couple of hours. This project will cost you less than the squirrel proof feeders you can buy already made from Amazon.
These “Flexi-Perches” ™, combined with PVC pipe of the right length and width, make an inexpensive, easy-to-build, and effective squirrel proof bird feeder.
Material you will need:
- 4″ diameter plastic drain pipe at least 24″ long. Quantity: 1 (a 10′ pipe cost me $5.48)
- 1/2 ” PVC couplers. Quantity 4 ($0.39 each)
– 4″ PVC cap. Quantity 1
– PVC glue
– 3/8″ sheet metal screws. Quantity 4
– 10 gauge (about 1/10″) galvanized wire at least 33″ long. Quantity: 1
- 6″ cable ties (tie wraps). Quantity: at least 4
– wood block approx 6″ high x 6″ wide x 1″ thick (i.e. a 6″ long piece of 1×6 board)
Have fun building this bird feeder that will protect the seed from those pesky squirrels.
